Free Software

At Projekt Neptun, we use an open source installer called Ninite. With this service, common open source applications can be installed automatically with just one click. It will automatically install the latest version of all the applications listed below. Your computer must be online to use the Ninite installer. We recommend to run the installer regularly (e.g. once a month) to keep the software up to date. Ninite Installer is unfortunately not available for Mac, but there is a good alternative: Getmacapps.

LaTeX

There is no LaTeX distribution included in the mentioned installers. We recommend using TeX Live or MiKTeX. The advantage of TeX Live is that it is available on all major platforms (standard on most Linux distributions, Mac OS X and Windows).  

Antivirus

We strongly recommend installing antivirus software on your laptop. Neptun Software Service offers all Neptun customers the commercial version of Sophos Endpoint Antivirus for free download. 

Data backup

We recommend to back up the system or at least the user data regularly! We offer the commercial version of Langmeier Backup Software for all Neptun customers, it can be downloaded for free via Neptun Software Service. For Mac backups use Apple's TimeMachine.
